| | By Daphne Lee, News Editor | | After two years of weekend road trips, so many of us are ready to travel internationally again. If you're planning your first big trip since the pandemic, you'll have to consider a few more logistical factors than before. In some countries, you might have to quarantine on arrival. And on your way home, you still have to show a negative COVID-19 test before boarding the flight. | | Today's Top Story | Why You Need COVID Travel Insurance | | There's one more thing to consider when you're booking your trip: COVID travel insurance. Conventional travel insurance didn't usually cover any losses resulting from a known epidemic. It was intended to insure against unforeseeable events like accidents, lost luggage, and trip interruptions. But travel insurance plans have evolved since the pandemic. Some plans cover the cost of COVID treatment if you get sick overseas, while others might even pay for quarantine costs. Make sure to read the fine print before you purchase the insurance because different tiers of coverage can come with various restrictions. For example, some companies might require an official diagnosis from a doctor to confirm that you tested positive for COVID-19 before your coverage goes into effect. | Know More | Travel insurance used to be optional. But some countries have started to require international travelers to buy health insurance for their trip. For instance, Belize requires travelers to purchase a plan through its tourism board that covers medical expenses related to COVID-19. | Feel Better | Keep in mind that most plans don't cover trip cancellations out of fear of contracting COVID, even if your travel destination is experiencing a surge in cases. You could opt for the higher tier insurance coverage that allows you to cancel for any reason, or book flights and accommodations that offer free changes or cancellations. | | | Tourism is having a major rebound since the beginning of 2022. In the past four months, TSA has recorded passenger volumes that are almost as high as pre-pandemic levels. | | | What Is 'TikTok Brain'? | TikTok is like a candy store that leaves users always wanting to watch the next clip. Recent studies found that constant dopamine rush could harm young people's impulse control as their brain develops. In a study with college students, brain scans of regular TikTok users showed an addiction-like response, which made it hard for them to close the app. Experts say long hours of TikTok usage may lead to shorter attention spans and concentration problems. While banning kids from using the app isn't necessarily productive, it may help to proactively fill their time with activities that get them away from the screen. | | Do We Have to Worry About the Next COVID Variant? | Even as the world starts to ease pandemic restrictions, COVID-19 is here to stay. An FDA panelist said that a new variant could overcome existing immunity and drive another wave as soon as this fall or winter. Making predictions like these will help us prepare for the future. By staying on top of emerging variants, vaccine makers and scientists can test formulas accordingly with the goal to minimize severe illness and deaths. | | | | | | | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the Verywell Health newsletter.
