Dear Chase, When I was a new copywriter, I was pretty useless. I knew how to do two things: write copy, and whoop ass. And the ass whooping business didn't pay too well. So, I was left with just copywriting. The problem is, copywriters sometimes miss out on opportunities because they lack other skills that clients need. For example, maybe you meet someone and they need their ads managed for them. You can 100% write ad copy, but you don't know how to run Facebook ads. Well, you're missing out on money now. That's unfortunate. Or maybe, someone hires you to do email copy, but they also need design and strategy. But, again…you're just a useless copywriter. You only have the one skill. This was a bit of a problem for me at the beginning, and I had two options: Option 1: learn design, email marketing, Facebook ads, and everything else that can add value to a client. Option 2: find the Bonnie to my Clyde and close some deals. So I went with Option 2. As I mentioned before, I used to do some freelance work for some smaller agencies. Everyone that worked with these agencies was also a freelancer. These agencies were small enough that everyone who worked there would only be there for like 5 hours a week, so there was more than enough time to get busy. As the leader of my little band of talented young marketers, I'd go deal-hunting for us. When a client wanted me to write their email copy, but they didn't have a designer or a strategist, I'd bring on my boy Dennard. He might be reading this email right now. He and I picked up a couple of clients and split the payment equally. I'd head-up the project, come up with all of the campaigns and flows that needed to be done, and write them. Dennard would design the emails, throw em in Klaviyo, and send a report over a week later. That way, I didn't have to do anything design related (and embarrass myself), and I could just stick to what I was good at. Copywriting and whooping ass. If someone on your email list wanted to do the same thing, here's what I'd do: Make a checklist in your notes app of everyone you'd like to have on your dream team. You'll need a killer ads person, a killer email marketer, a killer designer, a killer web design person, and maybe a killer closer. You can find these people on Twitter, IG, Upwork, or within your network. Create a group chat and name it something cool. Then, you can pull these people in for projects whenever you need, and they'll do the same for you. Design expert needs a copywriter. You're the go-to. Copywriter needs an ads person. They're the go-to. Web designer is building a funnel and needs a closer for their client's coaching program. Go-to. I don't know why more people aren't doing this, but it's a hell of an offer. Hey there, person who's good at something I'm not! I'm creating a group chat of people who are available for work and can help out with some cool projects that other members can't do themselves. Wanna join? Who wouldn't go for that? Then, you no longer need to worry about turning down work because you're unskilled. You have your Avengers, and you'll all take care of each other. Good luck. Yours truly, Alex Sent from my Megaboom Speaker P.S. If you're a brand or agency looking to find A+ marketers, consider working with a freelancer from MarketerHire. I've worked with a few marketing freelancers from them and have been super happy with the results. |
