We Tested 8 Pieces of Luggage—Here Are the Ones We Liked Best
Why is it that when you check a bag at the airport, it almost always seems to roll off the baggage claim damaged? It's a question the TripSavvy team has thought about a lot—and though there's nothing we can do to stop our luggage from being tossed around and abused, we can choose bags that will hold up to the roughest of baggage handlers. To arm you with that same knowledge, we decided to put some of the most popular pieces of luggage to the test.

For this process, we headed to our testing lab with eight pieces of luggage, each from reputable brands like TravelPro, Samsonite, and Timbuk2. First, we weighed and measured each bag to determine its actual size. Then, we packed up the bags and walked around with them as if we were using them on vacation—we rolled them over polished concrete, carpet, and even cobblestone streets to see which bags moved the best.

But the final test—and the most fun—was durability.

While we couldn't replicate exactly what goes on at the airport, we did come up with three tests that pushed the bags to their limits. We started by rolling each bag off of a 5-foot ledge outside onto the cobblestone street below. This caused a significant bit of scuffing, especially on the hard bags. Next, we brought the bags back inside and shoved them off a ladder before beating them with baseball bats (yes, you read that correctly). The ladder and bat tests showed us which bags could hold up to heavy impact and how much protection they offered your valuables inside. (In our real-world testing simulation, we ended up with more than a few cracked mugs and leaky toiletries.) While many of them held up pretty well, there were a few that outshone the rest.

Check out the full story to see which bags came out on top!
