| | | | | | The One Accessory That Keeps Me Warm and Cozy All Winter Long | One of my favorite parts about this time of year is socks. Yes, socks. Don't get me wrong, autumn and the start of winter have many charms. The trees change colors, winter holiday markets open, the air is crisp and refreshing, and the crowds of tourists leave some parts of NYC. But for me, cold weather means curling up in blankets, working on some sort of craft (knitting and crocheting at the current moment), and drinking a lot of tea. Since I try to keep my heat off for as long as possible, I'm always wearing a pair of socks to keep my feet warm and dust-free. Maybe it's just me getting old, but I can't get enough of them, especially a good wool pair. (The TripSavvy team is even having a sock-themed white elephant gift exchange this year, so I'm not alone in my affinity.) It wasn't always like this for me, though. For years I thought socks were boring and unimportant, only there to keep your feet from getting too sweaty. But I slowly realized that they tie an outfit together and help keep me warm at home without posting up in front of a fireplace as I did as a child. After my trips to Korea, I had two dozen pairs of socks to add to my sudden collection. This year's cold weather season will be different than in years past, but as a homebody and former full-time freelancer, my personal routine will be largely unchanged. Every day I down an obscene amount of hot tea, pull on a cozy pair of socks, slip on my house shoes, and work through my day. After work, I'll add in a comfy blanket, a podcast, and a craft project to keep the coziness going all day. If you're looking for some comfort in this less-than-comfortable time, or you just want to keep warm as it starts to get cold outside, TripSavvy has you covered with these cozy season picks. | | Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products and services; you can learn more about our review process here. The quickest way to the heart is, after all, through the stomach. | | What to Get Every Food Lover on Your List | | | It's been said that the quickest way to the heart is through the stomach, and at The Spruce Eats, we give that sentiment a fork and a knife way up. That's why every holiday season, we hunt down exciting assortments of snacks or kitchen wares destined to create future holiday treats and memories. Food gifts are my favorite. Not only do they make great stocking stuffers and conversation starters, but they're also more sustainable and don't contribute to long-term clutter in the home. Tip: Look for snacks that reference a special moment from the past year, or share a favorite flavor from a recent trip as a kind of edible souvenir. Last year, when travel wasn't possible, Santa brought the flavors of Italy to my boyfriend, filling his stocking with olive oil, pasta, and taralli. For the foodie who has everything, a clever kitchen gadget or tool, whether a handy wine decanter or a trendy air fryer, is just the ticket. This year, I have my eye on a monogrammed apron and a set of ceramic espresso mugs that can moonlight as mezcal glasses. If you're looking to send some love to friends and family from afar, we highly recommend these tested and approved gift baskets overflowing with cheese, coffee accoutrements, chocolates, wine, and more. And for the rest of the loved ones on your list, our editors curated the ultimate gift guide for every type of gourmand. --Taysha Murtaugh Editorial Director, Commerce | | | | | | Give the Gift of Food & Drink | | | | | | | The Spruce Eats on YouTube | | | | | | | | | | | | Follow us: | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to The Spruce Eats newsletter. A new study showed that participants experienced an improved mood, and over 50% of them had a slight to moderate upswing in their attention, language, and registration abilities. Take two minutes to read, explore, and reflect. We know that snuggling up with our pets can release endorphins, calm our minds, and make us feel less anxious. A recent study, from Issues In Mental Health Nursing, has taken the concept one step further by introducing robotic cats to older adults with dementia. Researchers gave 12 adult day care patients their own robot cat, which each patient named. Patients interacted with the cats in groups four times a week for a total of 12 sessions. Every participant experienced an improved mood, and over 50% of them had a slight to moderate upswing in their attention, language, and registration abilities. A similar study from 2016 used robotic baby seals with dementia patients instead of robotic cats. It found that feelings of stress and anxiety were lowered among the participants, which helped reduce use of psychoactive and pain medications. You might be thinking, "Why robots over real animals?" Robotic pets have unique benefits. The biggest is that they don't require the same level of maintenance, including feeding, watering, grooming, and cleanup. They're also more likely to be allowed into nursing homes where allergies and upkeep are a concern. The robotic pet brings comfort, companionship and lowers stress while helping the individual relax and feel calm." Research on the use of robotic pets is still underway, but early findings tell us that there are some worthwhile long-term benefits. Particularly for older adults with dementia. If someone in your family has dementia, consider looking into robotic pets as an option. Alternatively, consider having them spend controlled time living with pets.
