A study made by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration found that the foliage of indoor plants is capable of removing low levels of pollution while the plants roots, assisted by activated carbon filters removed air pollutants at higher concentrations.
In tests, these filters removed and biologically degraded pollutants before they accumulated.
The houseplants at the top of the study list that were most effective in removing formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene and carbon monoxide and also attractive
are: English Ivy, Gerbera Daisy, Dracaena 'Marginata', Dracaena Deremensis 'Warneckei', Dracaena Fragrans 'Massangeana' (Corn Plant), Spathiphyllum (Peace-Lily) and Chrysanthemum.
