Why March Is Actually the Best Time to Go Ice Skating
I am a staunch believer that March is the worst month of the year. It promises spring and longer days, but only delivers more winter and one less hour of sleep.

But there is one thing I have grown to love in March: winter sports.

I know, I know, a cold-weather spring break sounds like the stuff of nightmares to many people. Hear me out. In Vermont and Colorado, March is still one of the snowiest months of the year, typically on par with February accumulations. That means you could luck out with deep powder and a relatively warm bluebird day on the same trip — a.k.a. perfect conditions.

If you're homebound, like many of us are these days, lacing up at nearby ice rinks is a novel way to get outside. The brutal cold of January has mostly subsided, and peak holiday crowds have died down, leaving plenty of space to perfect that hockey stop.

Even better? Now is the time to stock up on winter gear. Ice skates, skis, coats, and accessories are all on sale as shops make room for swimsuits and surfboards. Pick up your skates or ski boots now, test them out for a month, and stash them away until next winter, when everything will feel new again.

Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products and services; you can learn more about our review process here. We may receive commissions on purchases made from our chosen links.
