Destination of the Day
Casablanca, Morocco
For those that haven't yet traveled there, the name Casablanca may conjure up romantic images inspired by the 1942 movie starring Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. However, Morocco's largest city has moved on to become a progressive and contemporary commercial center. Here you'll find 20th-century French and contemporary Islamic architecture interspersed with multinational restaurants and a more vibrant nightlife than the country's more traditional cities, all within a stone's throw of the Atlantic Ocean.
Things to Do
Join the locals strolling hand-in-hand along the seafront promenade known as La Corniche. Pay homage to "Casablanca" at Rick's Café, or wander through the Old Medina to the port and the remains of the city's 16th-century Portuguese fortress. Throughout the city, architectural landmarks abound, from those built in classic Moorish style like Makhama du Pacha to graceful European structures like L'Église du Sacre-Cœur. Find out more about how to spend your time in the city with our helpful guides on the best things to do in Casablanca and the ultimate 48-hour Casablanca itinerary.
What to Eat
Thanks to its large size and culturally diverse population, Casablanca has one of Morocco's most eclectic culinary scenes, and you will find cuisines from around the world represented here. That said, Casablanca is a great place to sample classic Moroccan dishes. Must-try staples include tagine (a rich stew of meat and vegetables, flavored with spices, nuts, and dried fruit), couscous, and pastilla (a savory pie made from meat wrapped in layers of paper-thin pastry). Above all, though, Casablanca is renowned for its seafood. Restaurants at the port and on La Corniche offer the chance to savor fresh-caught fish, oysters, and lobsters while admiring views of the ocean from which they came.
Where to Stay
