TripSavvy Is Celebrating Food and Drink in September
Many of my favorite travel memories have some connection to food. A sourdough bread bowl of clam chowder somewhere outside San Francisco, savory street crêpes in Paris, Indian food in London—all stand out in my memory when I think of those trips. This is due, in part, to the fact that I just really enjoy eating, but also because of my conviction that food is one of the easiest ways to learn about a culture. From the spices used and kinds of protein mixed in, to who typically does the cooking, to the preparation methods and plating preferences, cuisine tells a story that many don't actively think about when digging into a meal. Learning about different cultures through food is one of the main reasons I love to travel so much.

My wanderings around the world have led me to street food carts, Michelin-starred restaurants, food halls, and cozy diners. I've had the pleasure of learning about the origins of ropa vieja while sitting at a paladar in Havana. I spent two glorious hours learning about the origins and fermentation methods of tea in the Twinings London flagship store. I went on two week-long trips to South Korea in the span of six months. Why? Well, because there were still a bunch of restaurants I had yet to try.

So imagine my delight working on this month's digital issue, where we turn towards the wonderful world of food and drink. Curious about the legacy of iconic hotel bars? We've got you. Want to learn how climate change is revolutionizing the wine industry? Done. Eager to know how restaurants are joining the fight against invasive species? Do we have the article for you.

Grab your favorite snack, pour yourself a drink, and get ready to feast your eyes on these articles.

How to Choose Progress Over Perfection With Peloton Instructor Ally Love
Amy Morin, LCSW,
Verywell Mind Editor-in-Chief
On today's episode of The Verywell Mind podcast, I talk with Ally Love about how she learned to stop putting so much pressure on herself to be perfect, and how allowing for mistakes actually helped her to make progress in her (many) high profile careers.
Ally has performed as a dancer and model, and is currently a host of the Brooklyn Nets, a Peloton instructor, and also the founder and CEO of Love Squad, a fitness and lifestyle website that empowers women.

Why Ally Love Is Mentally Strong

Ally's successful career path has taught her that it's important to value progress over perfection, and to cut yourself some slack as you work toward your goals.

It's a message she teaches the people she works with as well. You don't have to be perfect but you can still take a step in the right direction today.

What You'll Hear on the Show
  • What to keep in mind when someone criticizes you
  • The question you should ask yourself when you put pressure on yourself to be perfect
  • How to recover from mistakes
  • How to aim for realism over perfectionism
  • How to accept that not everyone is going to like your choices
  • How to stop pressuring yourself to feel happy all the time
  • What to do when you're being too hard on yourself

I'm an image

I cannot continue to rely on this idea of everyone liking everything that I do. I have to like who I am and what I do in their lives."

What You'll Learn About Mental Health and Mental Strength

Some people assume that mental strength is about always striving to get to the top at all costs. After all, shouldn't you be strong enough to push through the pain or to persevere no matter what?

But sometimes, true strength can be seen in our attempts to make progress, rather than strive for perfection.

Taking a day off, recovering from a mistake, and rebounding from failure are part of the process.

Progress doesn't tend to come in a straight line. Sometimes things have to get a little worse before they get better.

So rather than assume you should be so strong that you never mess up, true strength can be about knowing that you're strong enough to recover when you make a mistake.
