I've Been on Hundreds of Flights, and I Finally Perfected the Plane Outfit
As frequently as I travel, it took me an embarrassingly long time to perfect my plane outfit. I constantly found myself too hot or too cold or simply too constricted and bloated following a carb-heavy plane meal. But then, one day, I did it: all the pieces aligned, and I found myself like Goldilocks—just right.

With miles and hours of research, here's the perfect plane outfit:

I've always been a fan of an oversized white-button down. They always look chic and put together for a woman, especially when paired with some understated jewelry, and they're incredibly comfortable. Athleta's Midtown Shirt is among the best I've found—it's made from a cool, crisp poplin that resists wrinkles and is generously cut. You'll find me wearing this shirt not just on the flight but on day two or three of my trip as well.

Since I first discovered Lululemon's On the Fly Pants a few years ago, I've sung their praises to any of my traveling friends who will listen. They're the perfect hybrid of appearance and comfort, and the ⅞ cut that hits just above the ankle is flattering on all body types. The fabric—Lulu's Luxtreme—is cool and smooth and sweat-wicking to boot.

Finally, for shoes: I typically always reach for my Allbirds Wool Runners. Wool is never too hot or too cold (are you sensing a theme here?) and is naturally antibacterial and odor-resistant, so these shoes never get stinky no matter how many times I have to sprint to catch my next flight. (Some of my friends in warmer climes are partial to Allbird's Tree Runners instead, but both sneakers are the perfect hybrid of comfort and durability.)

Now, you might want to add or subtract things depending on your comfort level. If I'm chilled or traveling to a cooler climate, I'll top off the look with Uniqlo's cult-favorite Ultra Light Down Jacket, but after hundreds of flights, I can confidently say that these three pieces make for the ultimate in plane chic and comfort.

From the Editors:
Caring for Your Mental Health in the Return to Normalcy
Every Wednesday throughout Mental Health Awareness Month, our editors will share insights from our new "Return to Normalcy" collection. The theme of this week is prioritizing your mental health.

As COVID-19 vaccinations roll out and restrictions are lifted, we're in a state of transition that may impact your mental health in many ways. Verywell Mind is committed to guiding you through this uncertain time with helpful, trustworthy content that will support you no matter what you're feeling.

Verywell Mind Editor-in-Chief
The pandemic inspired more conversations about mental health than I've ever heard before, even as a therapist. I'm thrilled that so many athletes, celebrities, mental health professionals, and everyday people stepped up to talk about their mental health.

This year reminded us that our environment plays a huge role in our psychological well-being. When you take away some of the things that are important to us—like time with extended family and social activities we love—our mental health is likely to take a dip.

Fortunately, many people learned new coping skills—like yoga. Others returned to simple pleasures they relied on in the past—like putting together puzzles and playing board games—to get through tough times.

But some people struggled to find healthy coping skills. And they reached for things that made them feel good for a minute, but introduced even bigger problems into their lives—like drugs, alcohol, or comfort foods.

For most of us, there were highs and lows. There were days when mental health improved and healthy coping skills prevailed. And other days when we struggled to feel good, gave into temptations, and lacked motivation to get things done.

As we begin to return to normalcy, my hope is that we'll emerge with a better understanding of mental health, less of a stigma associated with getting help, and more compassion for ourselves and others when mental health issues are present.
