Dear Chase,
I study a lot of copywriters.
I talk to them, I read their writing, etc.
After a year of being a coach, I know now what makes people a "natural".
Some people just have the soft skills to be a copywriter right away without needing much training.
And one of the main traits I've seen that indicates someone is a natural is a "bad childhood".
I don't mean a violent childhood. Or a boring childhood.
But a childhood where you were kind of ignored.
Just by talking to someone, I can tell if they were treated fairly during childhood.
If they were talked over a lot, if they were disrespected, etc.
If others around you acted like the stuff you said didn't matter, you will end up being a phenomenal copywriter.
When your early years consisted of you being talked over, you've likely adapted your conversation and delivery skills to make up for the fact that you often can't get a word in.
You talk a little faster. You learn how to be a better storyteller. You learn how to grab people's attention. You know how to deliver the most important points FIRST, before people stop listening.
For people that didn't have this issue, they tend to ramble.
They're not very concise. They just talk aimlessly without fear of people losing interest in what they're saying.
They're too comfortable talking about what only matters to THEM, instead of trying to capture attention from other people as quickly as possible.
In the setting of a conversation with your friends, this is fine. Doesn't really matter.
But as a copywriter, this is the opposite of what you should be doing.
Good copywriters understand how to capture attention FAST. Because that's the only way you can make money.
And, as unfortunate as it is, certain people were raised with the innate ability to do this. It's the only way they can be heard and understood.
It kinda sucks that this is how you learn this skill.
I truly wish everyone had a great childhood and everyone was properly socialized and nobody ever had to adapt within a bad situation.
However, not everyone was that lucky.
Some people had 40 siblings that all wanted to talk equally as much.
Some people had an impatient group of people around them from a young age that didn't have time for rambling.
Some people were treated unfairly and were disrespected for other reasons.
Doesn't matter.
When it comes to making money, we need to turn our weaknesses into strengths.
Dial in and realize that some things are unchangeable.
And that's okay.
This is a superpower. And if you can use it to capture attention faster, you'll make more money than all the people who had great adolescent years.
Yours truly,
Alex.
