Thanksgiving is Exhausting, These Dessert Recipes Aren't

Here's a hot take: I'm pretty over Thanksgiving. I said what I said. As much as I love getting together with family and gorging myself with endless sides (I'm looking at you, cornbread stuffing), it's a holiday I'm a bit more passive about these days—and that's OK.

Growing up, the countdown to turkey day started the moment the clock struck November 1st. We were the branch of the family tree that hosted everyone else, so that meant precise organization from decor to menu planning to clean-up and wipe-down. For some it's their Super Bowl and if that's you, we have a pretty stellar playbook for this final stretch.

For others like me, it feels pretty exhausting just thinking about it. Recently, I have taken on the role of zen potluck-goer. I'm here for the last-minute plans and hail-Mary desserts. I know I will eat good food, see some friends, and feel 100% relaxed the whole time—in part due to the festive cocktails I plan to enjoy.

Speaking of hail-Mary desserts, there are a lot of options that don't take a lot of time or space. If you are trying to avoid the oven, opt for a no-bake pie like this 10 Minute Pumpkin Pie or this rich Peanut Butter Pie With Cream Cheese Filling. And while Thanksgiving pies usually get the spotlight, don't forget about cakes that carry the best fall flavors. When you've got a to-do list as long as both arms, this pumpkin dump cake or any of these festive cakes will help you close out the culinary experience without the chaos.

This year's Thanksgiving feels like it snuck up on most of us, especially since it's the first time since the start of the pandemic that we are celebrating in bigger groups. So I'm looking for small ways to offload the inevitable stress the holiday brings by outsourcing some of the cooking or embracing simpler recipes. In fact, this year I just want to watch the parade from the comfort of my couch, plan a cookie exchange, sip wintery cocktails, and shovel hot crab dip into my mouth while binging the entire season of Great British Baking Show. How about you?
