The Best Cloth Face Masks, According to TripSavvy Editors

The more we wear face masks, the sooner we can safely get back on the road!

The first time I wore a face mask was March 22, 2020. I remember it clearly because it was also the day I left New York City to self-quarantine with my boyfriend in Western Massachusetts for three months. His dad picked us up at my apartment in Brooklyn, all three of us wearing N-95 masks to mitigate the risk of spreading the novel coronavirus during the three-hour drive.

While we were lucky and grateful to have received our N-95s before they even were in short supply, we all agreed: N-95s are uncomfortable, bordering on painful. Digging divots in our faces and inhibiting our breath, I had to make an effort to lower my hand every time I reached up to pull mine off for want of air.

Admittedly, just like being in high school again, I was also self-conscious about my appearance. I felt like my doomsday fashion drew stares and invited judgment. At the time, many of us thought that face masks were only useful if you were actually sick—was I being paranoid?

Over the last few months, however, it has become more and more evident how effective face masks are in slowing the spread of COVID-19. Thanks to the innovations of athletic brands and fashion companies around the world, face coverings have become a lot more comfy, breathable, and stylish since the early days of surgical masks and bandanas grabbed from the back of a dresser drawer.

You'll even find a variety of face masks to suit any occasion. Whether I'm going to a bonfire with my boyfriend's family and looking to impress, or hiking around Massachusetts and need a sweat-resistant mask, I'm not short of options. While I am still not 100 percent used to the idea more than four months later, I am all for everyone wearing masks if it means we can more likely get back on the road—safely and soon.

To help you find your new favorite face mask, we've rounded up our top picks for outdoorsy types, fashionistas, and everyone in between.
