How to Make an Epic Charcuterie Board

I bring them to pretty much every gathering I attend.

Fall has always been a season of gatherings for me. For one thing, I know a lot of people with fall birthdays. It seems like there's always an engagement party or baby shower. And when I was in college, I spent every fall Saturday tailgating and watching football. Usually everyone brings an appetizer to share—which makes it my favorite kind of party. I love bringing buffalo chicken dip, queso, and wings, but lately I've been bringing cheese boards since they're just as pretty as they are delicious.

It's easy to get intimidated by the masterpieces you see on social media or in cheese plate books, but I discovered a secret: Cheese never disappoints. So even if you've never assembled a cheese plate before, you don't have to be intimidated. And because fall can be a super-busy time, you can shop for the ingredients ahead of time, or order cheese online, and throw it all together that day.

I recommend investing in a good cheese board upon which to create your masterpiece, and some cheese knives, if you really want to impress. Then, all you need are a few different types of cheese (Gruyere, Gouda, and Gorgonzola are just some of my go-tos), garnishes (I like spiced nuts and dried apricots for this time of year), and crackers or bread. If you want to make it more hearty—and I usually do—add some cured meats. Finally, I've found that what really takes a plate to the next level is a delicious spread—jam, apple chutney, or honey.

I like that cheese works for all occasions, from fancy celebrations with champagne toasts to game watching with chips and beer, and all seasons. Here in NYC, the weather is cooling off. So I'm planning some fun Saturdays with friends, and I'm hoping for a very cheesy next few months.
