Santa Fe, the nation's oldest capital, boasts a vibrant and rich history that few other U.S. cities can match. Most of the town consists of 17th- and 18th-century Spanish adobe buildings, and it has a visual art scene rivaling that of cities several times its size. But if you look past all that, there's a trendy, even boundary-pushing side to this cultural capital that earns Santa Fe its quirky moniker as the City Different.
Most things to do in Santa Fe are rooted in the arts or in the outdoors. The city is loaded with museums, galleries, and shops dedicated to showcasing the work of Native American artists and craftsmen, Western painters, and the many contemporary artists who call the city home now. Of course, you can't forget the city's incredible surrounding landscapes—plan on spending a day hiking under a canopy of aspen, soaking in a mineral spring, or kayaking the Rio Grande.
When in Santa Fe, embrace the Hatch (green) chile culture. If someone asks you if you want chiles on whatever dish you've ordered, the answer is always yes. When ordering burritos, "smothered" or "wet" means the sauce will go on top and "smother" your burrito. "Christmas" means smothering your burrito with both green and red chile sauce. You could really spend a trip just exploring Santa Fe's food scene. But if you want to hit a few of our favorite picks, try Cafe Pasqual's or Sazón, both of which are near the Plaza. Away from downtown, we love Jambo Cafe. If craft beer or wineries are your thing, Santa Fe has plenty. We recommend Rowley Farmhouse Ales, Second Street Brewery, and Leaf & Hive Brew Lab.
Activities within the city alone could fill your itinerary, but the city's location in the heart of northern New Mexico makes it the perfect jumping-off point for day trips. For outdoorsy folks, we recommend day trips to Bandelier National Monument, the Ski Santa Fe area where there's plenty of excellent hiking, or even a day trip up to Taos. If you're feeling very adventurous, consider hiking Wheeler Peak near Taos, which at over 13,000 feet, is New Mexico's highest peak.
Trending in Travel Get Inspired Centrally located in the heart of Lesotho, Maletsunyane Falls is arguably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Africa. A single cataract on the Maletsunyane River, it plunges in an unbroken veil from the top of a sheer escarpment surrounded by impossibly green foothills. With a drop of 630 feet, it's also one of the tallest single-dropping waterfalls in the world. You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the TripSavvy newsletter.
