August 7th is Purple Heart Day here in the United States, so today, we're honoring and celebrating this country's incredible veterans for their service. What Is the Purple Heart? The Purple Heart commemorates those who have been killed or wounded in combat during their military service. It's a recognition of their bravery and sacrifice, and today, it's the oldest military award still given to service members. One notable recipient is Charles Barger, a Missouri native who served in France during World War I. He was awarded ten Purple Hearts for his injuries along with the military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor.
