These aren't your average vacation rentals, either.
Destination of the Day
Portland, Oregon
The natural beauty of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest have turned the area into a prime travel destination, made only more appealing by the city of Portland. When it comes to parks, Portland has an embarrassment of riches—you can hike a dormant volcano in the middle of the city at Mt. Tabor, visit the International Rose Test Garden to experience the color and fragrance of 10,000 rose bushes, or stroll the Portland Japanese Garden. Likewise, PDX's arts and cultural scene has something for everyone. The Portland Art Museum, the oldest art museum in the Pacific Northwest, is known for its Native American collection, while Pittock Mansion gives visitors a glimpse into Portland's glamorous golden era.
Eating and drinking are sports in Portland, with the city claiming renowned coffee, craft beer and wine bars, bakeries and ice cream shops, and restaurants of all kinds. Walkable downtown Portland and the west side have the highest concentration of hotels, ranging from big to boutique—but don't feel like you have to stay downtown. Some of Portland's coolest neighborhoods are on the other side of the river, so grab a bike and get exploring!
Your Packing List
Every month of the year can be considered suitable for hiking, so be sure to pack a sturdy pair of hiking boots. From the energy return to the comfort, we found that The North Face's Vective Exploris Mid Futurelight hikers were the best of the best right out of the box and throughout testing (women's version available here).
The good news is that Portland's climate is mild year-round. The bad news? It rains a lot from November through the spring, and even into June. If you're visiting during those months, you'll want to pack a raincoat! For those looking to hike, Outdoor Research's Helium Rain Jacket is the perfect option as it's lightweight, breathable, and tear resistant.
Whether you visit in the summer or fall, it's always best to bring clothing you can layer.
The Fish River Canyon is Africa's largest canyon, second only in size to America's Grand Canyon. Located in the south of Namibia, it is thought to have formed around 500 million years ago. Today, the Fish River has carved out over 100 miles of rock, and in places the canyon walls are over half a kilometer high. You can hike the canyon, but only during the cooler months (May to September). The hike takes five days and offers spectacular views and sightings of wildlife including baboons, klipspringers, and hyraxes.
