Let's take five minutes to see this week in a new light. | | The internet is filled with all sorts of personality tests that'll tell you things like which Friends character you are or what type of cheese represents you best. As fun and silly as these tests are, there's also a handful of deeper personality tests, typically developed by experts in the mental health field, that can lend genuine insight into who you are. | | These tests can help you learn more about yourself and better understand both your strengths and weaknesses." | | The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was designed to help people identify their personality type, strengths, and preferences. It was developed by Isabel Myers and her mother, Katherine Briggs, based on their research on Carl Jung's theory of personality types. Today, it's considered one of the most widely used psychology instruments. In the test, you'll answer a series of questions and then be assigned one of 16 personality types based on the following combinations: - Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I)
- Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)
- Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)
- Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)
The results can help you better understand your likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, and potential compatibility with others. You can take a variation of the test here or the original test here. | The HEXACO Personality Inventory was developed in 2000 by two Canadian psychology professors, and measures six facets of personality: - Honesty-Humility
- Emotionality
- Extraversion
- Agreeableness (vs. Anger)
- Conscientiousness
- Openness to Experience
In the test, you'll review statements like "I often go for walks" or "I like to watch TV" and then will receive scores in each of the six categories along with 25 unique facets. The test helps us understand, predict, and adjust our behaviors. You can take the test here. | While the former two personality tests are rooted more so in science and research, the Enneagram test has become a widely popular tool, as well. The Enneagram theory says that each person has a dominant personality type that's then shaped by their unique environmental factors and experiences. In the test, you'll be asked to review and rate statements such as "It's important that others like me" and "I feel emotions deeply" based on how true they are to you. Then, you'll be assigned an Enneagram number one through nine. Interestingly, a study published in the Journal of Adult Development discovered that participants of an Enneagram training program exhibited an improvement in both ego development and personal growth. You can take the test here. | | Ways to Stay Positive This Week | | Ways to Nurture Your Mind and Body | This week, take 10 to 15 minutes to try one of the above personality quizzes and invite a friend, family member, or partner to do the same.
