The Best Types of Dog Collars & Harnesses

Which Collars are Helpful and Which are Harmful?

There are three main categories of collars: rolled or flat collars, martingale collars and prong collars. In addition there are also e-Collars but for our purposes we will focus on the prior mentioned three.

Flat/Rolled Collars

Flat or rolled collars are standard collars which fasten, buckle or slip around your pup's neck. Many owners choose to have their dog wear a collar for ID tag purposes even if they do not use this to attach the leash. For older or smaller dogs, you may be able to walk your dog with this type of collar but most dog owners want something which allows a bit more control.

Martingale Collars

These collars are designed to fit over your dogs head and sit a bit higher up on their neck. The inside of this collar is looped and when your dog pulls back on their leash, where it attaches to the collar, a martingale collar will apply pressure to the sides of your pup's neck. The thought behind this is to better be able to control them if they get to the point of pulling on the leash.

Prong Collars

Prong Collars are made out of metal and feature the ends of the collar being turned into the dog's neck. This means, when the dog pulls hard the sides of the pronged collar can be driven into the dog's neck. This sounds quite harsh but some trainers swear by this method and others state that it can cause long term issues such as tracheal collapse. Be sure before you use this type of collar that you do your research to ensure your pup is not pulling so hard the collar digs strongly into their neck as this could cause long term damage.la

Best Types of Dog Harnesses

There are many type of harnesses designed for all sizes and shapes of dogs. Before your select the type of harness, be sure to consider your dog's size, personality, breed and activity level.

Pull from the Front Harness

These types of harnesses have the leash clip into the front of the dog harness so that the owner can pull or correct the dog slightly off balance in case they need to improve control of the pup. For a lot of dogs, this can be a bit of a "wake up" call as it can make it harder to walk when being jerked to the side. This type of harness is better suited for younger, more boisterous dogs or breeds and is not good for older and more well behaved dogs.

Pull from the Top Harness

This would be the harness of choice for small dog owners who don't feel comfortable walking the dog by a leash attached to a around the neck collar, or for dogs who are middle aged or older who are quite well-behave on walks or hikes. They are great for well-behaved dogs or dogs who are not big pullers. It can be more comfortable for the dog and easier to handle, and there will be no getting tripped up in the line of the leash since it attaches on their back.

Gentle Leaders®

Gentle Leaders® are a type of harness that loops around the dog's snout. This can be good for dogs who like to pull a lot and have a hard time being in other harnesses due to pulling patterns as sometimes the collars being around their snout can stop them from wanting to pull due to the way it feels on their face. It may not be an option for all dogs though, as some really cannot stand having something like this around their snouts.

The Best of Both Worlds

An Easy Walk® is a brand of dog harnesses that is cool and can be attached to the front or the top of a dog's harness. This can be good for dogs who sometimes get boisterous and want to pull, while other times walk very well as it allows you to change the attachment point anytime you need!
