Copywriting is the greatest skill to learn (change my mind)

Hey friend, happy Friday!

Welcome to Edition 47 of Alex In My Inbox.

Before we dive into this week's edition, I want to share 2 strategic trends I'm betting on for 2023 through the advisory work I'm doing. Here's what I'm betting on:

1. Doubling down on your owned audience will be the single most important thing you can do for your business.

A company called Retention.com has built the best platform for growing your email list and sending more abandonment emails. My clients using it are seeing a 3x to 4x ROI on average. You HAVE to check out what they're doing.

2. Hiring people full-time will slow down, while freelance and contract hires will pick up.

A company called MarketerHire is the best of the best for connecting with vetted freelance marketers. I used to work with companies through their platform and now I hire great freelance marketing talent from them.

Now back to today's scheduled programming.

Alex In My Inbox is a weekly copywriting series where I share interesting, actionable, and hilarious copywriting tips from "Alex."

Alex is an anonymous copywriter who shares these tips with me so that I can share them with you.

Today, Alex abandoned the idea of writing an email to me, and really just wrote a love letter to copywriting that I just so happened to be CC'd on.

They should get a room.

Here it is.

Enjoy!

Dear Chase,

I. Love. Copywriting. So much.

There are so many people who don't understand just how great of a skill copywriting is, and how great of a business model it is to be a freelancer.

As someone who may just be starting a career, copywriting may be the #1 thing you can learn to put you ahead of everyone else.

This is the type of skill that you can use to network with every business owner in the world.

As corny as the word "networking" is, it's actually very important.

There may come a day when you get put into a room of a bunch of very wealthy business owners in their 50s or 60s.

You're the poorest one there.

Everyone's making 8 figures a year, and you don't have any advice, stories, or experience that you think would benefit them.

In reality, you have something that literally everyone in that room would need.

Every single business owner in there could learn something from you.

If they're using email marketing, you can write them better emails.

If they're investing a lot in paid media, you can write better ads.

If they're doing cold email outbound, you can write better scripts.

If they're brick and mortar, you can reimagine the signs in the window.

If they're moving online for the first time in 20 years, you can write them a website that looks like it's from this century.

You have more power than you know what to do with.

You can offer value to basically anyone in the room.

Copywriting is like insurance. Everyone needs it, whether they know it or not.

It's the type of thing that can apply to literally any business in the world, which means you have hundreds of millions of potential customers.

Copywriting is SO broad, that it can do just whatever you need it to.

This is the one thing that copywriting has over basically every service-based business that's popular right now.

E-commerce email marketing -> client needs to be on Shopify and Klaviyo

High ticket sales -> client needs to have a product expensive enough to warrant a closer

SEO -> client needs to have keywords that are actually rankable

Short form content -> client needs to have a business that TikTok even cares about

Copywriting is a skill that can serve any business, online or offline, in any industry, for any channel, at any price point.

It is crazy.

The point of this email is to show you that you will never, ever, ever run out of businesses to work with.

And ChatGPT can't replace you.

And it takes you maybe 3-6 months to become competent enough to add a little bit of value to the people around you.

Learning to be a copywriter is one of the greatest decisions I've ever made.

Because it led me to you, Chase.

Sorry to get sappy.

But you love it though.

Yours truly,

Alex.

I hope you enjoyed this edition.

Two final things to wrap this up:

1. If you want to make more money via email and SMS marketing, take a look at how Retention.com can help you.

2. Who you hire this year will make or break your year, so consider hiring best-in-class marketing freelancers to propel your business to new heights.

Enjoy your weekend!

Best,

Chase
