What is Fiber and Why Include in Your Pet's Diet?

Fiber, in the context of diet and nutrition, refers to a type of carbohydrate that cannot be fully digested by the digestive system. It is primarily found in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.

Unlike the other more digestible carbohydrates, fiber passes through your pet's digestive tract largely intact, providing a range of health benefits due to how their body metabolizes it. In addition, fiber helps improve the performance of probiotics giving them food.

For these and many more reasons, it is important that this vital nutrient is included in your pet's diet as it will improve the longevity of your dog or cat and ensure them a long and healthful life.

Below are three key benefits of fiber -- you can also read more on the subject of fiber in our blog linked below.

3 Key Benefits of Fiber

Benefit #1: Fiber Promotes a Healthier Gut

Just like fertilizer nourishes a lawn, fiber acts as nourishment for the beneficial microbes in your pet's gut. When your pet consumes an adequate amount of fiber, it allows the good bacteria in their gut to thrive while deterring the bad microbes that do not consider fiber as food.

By incorporating fibrous foods into your pet's diet you can increase the population of beneficial microbes and eliminate the harmful ones.

Benefit #2: Less Smelly and Easier to Pick Up Poops!

Because fiber feeds the good microbes and starves out the bad microbes in your pet's gut, it also improves their breath and bowl movements. When a higher ratio of fiber to protein is digested in your dog's or cat's large intestines, it enhances digestion and combats any protein by-products in their gut. The by-products of protein digestion are responsible for the smelly poop your pet can experience.

Having more fiber in their diet means they will improve their digestion and have less ammonia in their stool equaling a less smelly and easier to pick up experience whether on the grass or in the litter box!

Benefit #3: Enhanced Nutrient Absorption from Food

Studies have found that pets consuming fiber have better nutrient digestibility and that if they consume a larger amount of fiber, rather than just a lot of protein, the fiber will feed the good microbes in the gut. This super-charges their gut bacteria and enhances digestion of all food, including protein. The easier it is for your pet to digest their food, the more nutrients they will absorb. Long term more nutrients means stronger recovery against any illness and a slower aging process!
