Often times we are traveling or entertaining friends and family at our homes. In addition to getting more visitors we experience a greater amount of package deliveries with the Amazon and UPS drivers working overtime. We are also more frequently cooking or engaging in activities such as wrapping gifts which are not typically done as much throughout the year.
For this reason, it is important to teach your puppy or adult dog to feel comfortable in their kennel, on their bed, or designate them to a specific area or room in your home. This keeps them out of danger, preventing them from running out the door to catch the delivery person or after your family member especially if you have smaller children or toddlers around.
Below are three tips you can use to enforce this command and help your dog master it. | | | | The verbal command you use for telling your dog should be one you can implement in different settings. For example if you crate them, or buckle them in when driving in the car, it will communicate to your dog what to do. You can then use this training command at home, when out at a restaurant or in a foreign area like a friend's home or even out in a park. Use a mat or towel that your pup can familiarize themself with and bring that same mat or towel around to the locations in which you are training.
This needs to be different than "sit" , "stay" or "lie down" as it needs to prepare your pup mentally to know they are about to go to their designated spot and stay there until released. Many dog trainers like the word or phrases: "go to your place" , "place" or "go to bed" as they are simple and it is differentiated from other commands. In addition, hand commands can be helpful for when you're further away from your dog in your home or out and about but ensure that you differentiate this commands from other hand-signals. | | | | Tip #2: Use Food or Play as Motivation | Dogs work great with positive re-enforcement so make sure to have plenty of high reward treats (treats which your pup considers better or more favorable than your standard treats for walks or training) on hand and break down the training into small intervals. You can use the treat as a reward to stay or in their place and then another treat as you release them. Some dogs don't enjoy treats so for these pups get their favorite toy or play a few seconds of tug of war or fetch as a reward.
Keep your training intervals short and never train longer than a few minutes at a time. It's recommended to prioritize the sessions as your dog is learning and ensure you repeat training with several spaced out sessions throughout the day.
| | | | Tip #3: Build Step by Step | | | | | The best place to begin this training is within your home or even within a specific room in your home. From there work on creating more distance between you and your dog when you give the command. After this you can move to different rooms or areas of your home and finally to other places you frequent.
