It got me thinking about how the copywriting world is evolving and how a lot of us aren't up to date.
There's a new wave of really good marketers these days, Chase.
Back in the day, we had Ogilvy, Kennedy, Makepeace, etc.
Now, we have Emma from Virginia.
Emma from Virginia is a TikTok Shop affiliate for 3 different brands, makes 3 videos a day for each company, and generates 30M views a month, bringing in $400k in revenue for her brands.
This is something we've never seen before.
Some of the best marketing talent we're able to witness is a 23-year-old unemployed young lady whose last job was at Chipotle.
HOW are trained direct-response copywriters getting lapped by young girls on TikTok?
I'll tell you how.
And this, I believe, is the key to becoming better writers/marketers.
They have zero training and therefore zero bias.
They speak from their personal experience about the products they sell.
They speak to a demographic they're familiar with (or even a part of).
They sell by demonstrating rather than just talking.
They focus on REAL benefits that REAL people actually want.
Look again at the screenshot above where she's talking about pre-workout.
She just casually made everybody reading that want to try it.
She used "dream outcomes" that everybody wants to experience.
She made it extra personal.
It's so well done.
If you're a copywriter trying to learn what these TikTok Shop creators are doing so you can replicate it…
You have to unlearn a lot of the BS that was taught to you by old-school copywriters.
All of those dumb buzzwords, really long headlines, extravagant claims, broad benefits that don't speak to anyone in particular.
All of this stuff is outdated. It's one of the reasons why I clown direct-response writers so often in my emails to you, Chase.
The copywriter's goal in 2024 should be to focus on relatability.
Focus on really getting inside the mind of the customer to the point where you become them.
Using language that ACTUALLY speaks to what they want, and not just what you think they want.
If Emma from Virginia can do it, I believe that you can too.
Go and study these TikTok Shopywriters. They're killing the game.
Yours truly,
Alex.
