Dear Chase,
Was thinking about you over Christmas man. I'm 25. Christmas isn't really that fun for someone of my age.
It's really meant for just small children and parents. You get to be Santa Claus and bring joy to your lil ones just like your parents did for you, which is great.
I got baby fever.
Anyway.
We have less than 1 week to go in 2024. I know a lot of people are starting to think about things they wanna do in the new year and how they're gonna conduct themselves.
I've always loved the quote, "reach for the moon to land among the stars," because even though it's meant for children, it actually is the way we should be thinking about setting business goals.
At the end of 2023, I told myself we were gonna do $10M in 2024.
I built out the infrastructure for that to happen.
Our team went from 8 people to 21, I added 4 new marketing channels, and really worked my ass off to make it happen.
I set everything up in order for us to make $10M in 2024.
Unfortunately, we're ending at a measly $6M. Just over.
As disappointed as I am that we only did $6M, I'm now realizing that we would have NEVER been even close to hitting that if we didn't aim for $10M.
If we aimed for $6M, we probably would have hit $3M.
You get the point.
I now understand that in order to hit $10M, we need to aim for like $15M+.
I need to build this thing as if it's GOING to do $15M, and put in that amount of effort, in order to touch $10M.
This is how everyone needs to think about revenue targets.
You're almost always going to fall short of those, unless you're some special genius or something.
If you wanna make $50k a month as a freelancer, you need to build it as if you're trying to hit $100k a month.
You need to attract clients that you think will pay you $6-10k a month.
You need to probably bring on a junior writer (or two) to help with the fulfillment.
You need to market yourself to more leads than you deem necessary. If 100 pitches a day would get you to $50k a month, you need to do 200 a day.
You need to go bigger than you think you'll have to go in order to hit the REAL goal, which is actually $50k a month.
Business is a game of inputs. And the bare-minimum amount of inputs is usually not what will get you to where you need to be.
All of these numbers are possible. You just need to go above and beyond the call of duty in order to hit them.
It's all just an effort thing, Chase.
Most people aren't broke because they're dumb. They're broke because they're lazy. Luckily, lazy is easier to fix than dumb.
I encourage everyone to go make 2025 their highest-earning year yet.
It's possible if you overshoot.
Yours truly,
Alex.
