Dear Chase,
First of all, happy 150th edition of Alex In My Inbox.
That's almost three years straight of me writing to you on a weekly basis. Also, we got ourselves a nice round number. Very satisfying.
Speaking of milestones, I'm ALSO coming up on 5 years of being a professional copywriter.
Doesn't even feel real to say that.
I still remember the early days, where I would drive around for hours during Covid, listening to podcasts about copywriting.
Or the first round of outreach where I was sitting on my mom's couch sending cold emails to get my first client.
I still remember how badly I wanted to just make $6-7k a month from copywriting. It was all I could think about.
Nearly 5 years later, I've netted 7 figures from client work alone, and I'm thinking a lot about where this skill can take me next.
The one thing I love about copywriting is that it's the sole skill that allows you to create pretty much anything you want.
Over my career, I've worked with e-commerce brands, agencies, info-products, SaaS companies, local businesses, and everything in between.
I've gotten to take a look into all of these different businesses, and I've realized that almost all of them rely on just being a fantastic marketer.
As a copywriter, I've realized that I can pretty much pursue any business model I want.
And this is the most amazing thing about the people I'm teaching now, who are just getting started in this business.
Maybe they've signed a couple of clients, they're making $4-5k a month, and they're hungry to keep going.
Obviously, freelance work is not the be-all-end-all of what you can achieve as a copywriter.
I know people who have made mid-6 figures just from freelancing, but it goes so much further.
Copywriting is the skill that underlies all successful online businesses.
Your ability to communicate your product in an attractive way to a large audience will make you millions no matter what.
The real path for a freelancer is not just to freelance forever.
What I recommend to everyone is as follows:
Your first year as a copywriter, you'll probably earn $70-80k. You're learning a lot, you're getting your footing, and you're building your network.
Your second year, you can probably make $200k+. You've become extremely competent and you start to work with some higher-level clients.
Your third year, you can potentially even make close to $500k. You really hit a stride, get some big rev share deals, and border on mastery.
After that, you have all of this experience, and hopefully a few hundred grand in the bank that you can put towards something new.
It's ultimately up to the copywriter for what they wanna pursue next, but the possibilities are endless.
I know some wicked direct-response writers who go on to build an e-commerce brand.
They invest $10-20k into building something amazing, and put their marketing skills to work for their OWN product that can potentially net them millions, later down the road.
Or, they launch their own offers in the info space that may or may not even require their face.
I know a couple guys who have launched faceless dating coaching offers that have made 8 figures just because they have an incredible funnel that converts on cold traffic.
Or, if you wanna back away from copywriting altogether, you have the funds to do that.
You could just take $100k and put it in real estate, slowly (over time) build a portfolio that nets you $10-15k a month in passive income, and maybe work with 2-3 good clients that can keep you comfortable.
There are so many options.
Of course, these are all a little out of reach for beginners, but it's extremely possible to go and build up a career over the next few years that can feed you for life.
The money's on the table.
Kinda like what you've done, Chase.
Copywriting helped you build this insane newsletter that is now scoring sponsorships from some of the biggest players in the space.
That skill you have will feed you forever.
There's never been a better time to start.
Yours truly,
Alex.
