The Denver Zoo has a tiny new addition and wants your help naming her. Last month, a female African pancake tortoise became the first of its species to hatch at the zoo, joining her mom, Waffles, and three males named Short-Stack, Denny, and Flapjack. Keeping with the breakfast theme, the four baby name options are: Griddle, Syrup, Maple, and Flip. Submit your vote — and see how your favorite stacks up to the rest.

The 23 Best Beaches in the US, According to Lonely Planet

For the latest edition of its book Best Beaches, the travel aficionados at the outlet Lonely Planet explored 100 of the world's most incredible shores. And for a new roundup, it selected 23 gems in the United States from that list. Though the roundup is numbered, the outlet gave each selection its own "best for … " attribute rather than ranking them based on a scoring metric (so very diplomatic!). Leading the list is Driftwood Beach in Jekyll Island, Georgia (pictured). Given that The Walking Dead filmed there, it's no surprise Driftwood was named "best for eerie photo opportunities." It was once part of a maritime forest, and as the beach eroded, trees collapsed — some are over 500 years old. Grayton Beach in Florida took the No. 2 spot and was deemed "best for kayaking in rare dune lakes," with the outlet noting that the "sugar-white sands of Grayton Beach billow like delicate frosting" in the wind. Also in the Sunshine State, No. 3 went to South Beach, dubbed "best for glitz and glamour." Check out the rest of the roundup, with spots in California, Texas, Maine, the Virgin Islands, and more.

Scientists Discover a Root Cause of Aging
Aging starts earlier than you think, and it begins at the cellular level. Starting in your 30s, the mitochondria, responsible for 90% of your body's energy, take on damage with time and your cells slowly lose the ability to repair them. This decline wears down your physical strength and vitality, lowering quality of life over time. But recent discoveries have revealed a way to restore this process and support healthy aging. Mitopure® is clinically shown to trigger a cellular recycling pathway to give your energy generators new power. When taken daily, Mitopure replaces aging mitochondria and helps to rebuild new ones, increasing cellular energy. The result? Studies found participants saw muscle strength increase without any changes to exercise.* The best part? 200 Voters Talked to Each Other for 4 Days, and Minds Were Changed on Both Sides

We like to think of Nice News as a haven from polarizing political headlines, but this story offers a little optimism on that front. In Pennsylvania, nearly 200 voters across the political spectrum spent four days in one room respectfully discussing hot-button topics — and lo and behold, people changed their minds. The experiment was part of an ongoing project titled America in One Room, which seeks to ignite civic engagement and strengthen democracy. "When people have strong views, they very often have never considered the other side. And a lot of political scientists say, 'Well, that's because they're entrenched and calcified and they're in their filter bubbles,'" event co-organizer James Fishkin told Politico. "But they're not quite calcified. They are movable." Issues that were discussed included environmental policy, voter ID requirements, and subsidizing college tuition. Surveys taken during and after showed opinion shifts on both sides, Republican and Democrat. "When you have long-form ability to discuss politics face-to-face, you can convey nuance and you can understand the emotions, drivers, and backgrounds of the people that you're speaking to," said co-organizer Henry Elkus. "I think that's the real lesson here, is that democracy does work as intended when people actually are civil and can sit down with one another."

Sweden's Chickens Go Cage-Free, Without a Legal Ban

In today's eggcellent news, Sweden recently became the first country in the world to have its chickens go cage-free — without legislation requiring it. After more than 50 years of advocacy, animal justice organization Project 1882 announced June 17 that it had used data from regional authorities and the egg industry to confirm that there are no longer any commercially raised hens living in cages in Sweden. Back in 1988, the Swedish Parliament voted to ban chicken cages, but the law was later amended to allow the continued use of certain "enriched" cages. So Project 1882 doubled down on its efforts, which included running public awareness campaigns and hosting corporate dialogues. Thanks to its work, more than 85 companies have joined the movement opposing cage eggs, demonstrating an industry-wide increased interest in animal welfare. This historic achievement sets "a powerful example for the rest of Europe," Project 1882 CEO Benny Andersson told Food Ingredients First. "It demonstrates that NGO animal welfare advocacy drives real change. It also proves that retailers, restaurants, and food companies can make a difference for the animals, even when politics fails."

A smile in house form
When Maureen Clemons and her husband, Mike Peck, decided to paint their house lavender to lift their moods during the COVID-19 pandemic, they didn't imagine the pastel color would become a pick-me-up for their Michigan neighborhood. Not only did they receive compliments and cheers from passersby, but the hue struck a particularly emotional chord with one neighbor, who tracked down a favorite book from his childhood to explain his reaction. He gifted them the book, along with a handwritten letter. See the couple's home and read the sweet note.
