As the heat begins to cool down, here's to planning a few outdoor outings throughout the fall.
| TRAVEL DEALS | | 3 Tested Products to Upgrade Any Camping Experience | Autumn is the best season for camping. The days are cooler, the summer crowds are lighter, and there are opportunities for leaf peeping. And it's one more chance to get outside before most of the Northern Hemisphere plunges into winter.
As a lifelong camper and backpacker, some of my favorite outdoor experiences have come in the fall. Weekend escapes into the Mark Twain National Forest with my parents. Mid-week bikepacking overnights with friends between grad school classes to Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area in mid-Missouri. Extended backpacking trips in Colorado's Maroon Bells Wilderness and Montana's Glacier National Park. Not to mention weekend backyard hammock slumbers.
Through those experiences—and countless others—I've learned not to take for granted or undervalue days and nights spent outside with friends and family. I've also learned there are certain items of gear that can upgrade an overnight in the outdoors. Here are some of my favorites: | | - Eureka Ignite 2-Burner Camp Stove: A must for any backcountry chef. The simmer-capability is as good as most kitchen gas ranges. The sidewalls provide ample wind protection. Next level tip: Spring for the Lodge Griddle/Grill cast iron.
- Helinox Chair One: Gram-counting nerds, shield your eyes. At the end of a long day backpacking, having the Helinox Chair One to sink into is worth the extra two pounds. (As is a flask of TINCUP American Whiskey.)
- Wacaco Pipamoka: I've spent years trying to find the perfect camp brew. Wacaco's Pipamoka is close. It has cold brew capability and brews directly into an isothermal stainless steel mug. At less than a pound and fairly packable, it can also be an ideal backpacking option.
