The July 4th Holiday is often a time we get together with our friends and family to celebrate outdoors. Often times, this means our dogs are most certainly invited! We know you want to celebrate and do not want to leave your pawed pals out of all the fun including the foods. What foods are safe or not safe to share can sometimes be challenging to understand in the moment. To help, we've broken it all down in this quick digestible guide for you and your pup.

Foods You Can Safely Share

1. Fruits + Veggies. For fruits, make sure to share separately than meat products as fruit digests best alone. For veggies, make sure they are NOT smothered in oil or butter as too much fat can cause an upset stomach. Try to time it so that you give it a good 90 minutes before you add foods on top of fruits such as:

  • Watermelon
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Cucumber
  • Tomatoes

2. Lean Cuts of Meat. Dogs don't do well with high fat foods or overly cooked foods, so make sure the meat is lean cut and cooked but not charred. If the burger or hot dog is too burnt for you to eat, it's also too burnt for your dog.

3. Plain Carbs. Pasta, beans and bread can be okay for your pup in moderation. Made sure you don't have any extra sauces added and make sure your pup doesn't eat too much as these kinds of more simple carbs can make them more hungry. Beans are a good chocie as long as they don't contain extra oil, fat or hot spicy mixes.

Foods to Avoid

1. Highly processed breads and fancy pasta. Plain carbs, yes, but fancy versions of those carbs with mayo and oil such as potato salad and pasta salad? No... these foods are extra rich and will be harmful to your pet's tummy if consumed.

2. Rich sauces. this not only means your potato salad but also topper foods such as mustard and ketchup. These are highly processed and high in sodium and fats and definitely will not benefit your pup if consumed.

3. Big danger items: grapes, onions and corn on the cob. Many people are aware of the dangers that grapes, raisins and onions cause our pups, but corn can actually be a food they can consume for health. The reminder here is that the cob itself can be very dangerous. If swallowed it can lead to an intestinal blockage and bowl perforation which could require surgury or even be fatal. Make sure to throw away all corn cobs and keep your pup away from the trash!

This will keep the tummy upsets at bay and allow for easy digestion! Your pets can even take a few extra servings if needed for the additional enzyme and probiotic boost all summer long.
