As I head to the Spartan World Championships in Abu Dhabi, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey we've had in this desert oasis over the past few years.
The Al Wathba desert has become synonymous with grit and determination, and so many of our athletes reach the starting line thinking, "I can't believe we get to do this."
Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, our partners, and participants have embraced the Spartan spirit and driven tremendous success. Thousands of Spartans from dozens of countries will converge this weekend, navigating challenging terrain and obstacles that test the limits of body and mind.
This year, as we prepare for the dunes of Al Wathba, there's an added layer of excitement. The Abu Dhabi Sports Council has introduced two new events that promise to elevate the Spartan World Championship to new heights.
First, we are introducing the Spartan Night Sprint, a thrilling 5K desert course illuminated under the night sky. Picture this: headlamps flickering as Spartans charge through the darkness, overcoming obstacles with the glow of determination.
It's a spectacle that will kick off the championship weekend, with live music, a Parade of Nations, and an athlete panel-discussion adding to the festivities.
Second, we are adding the Elite 3K World Championship and Elite 3K Team Relay World Championship categories.
As the athletes compete, they'll reach new heights in pursuit of a personal best and maybe even capture some of the prize money up for grabs for the top three winners in each category. I hope they remember that each obstacle is not just a physical challenge but a metaphor for the obstacles we face in life.
The Al Wathba desert, with its ever-shifting sands and unforgiving terrain, is the perfect location for Spartans to put a bow on 2023 and look forward to 2024. If you haven't got next season planned out, click here and commit to a 2024 race today.
I'm honored to lead this incredible community, and I can't wait to witness the Spartan spirit in Abu Dhabi.
So, Spartans, lace up your shoes, secure those headlamps, and get ready to leave your mark on the dunes. Abu Dhabi, here we come!
Here's to The Hard Way!
Joe | | You Ask, Joe Answers | Q: Hey Joe, If you had to pick just one healthy habit for 2024, what would it be?
-- Joey L., Northampton, Pa.
A: Hi Joey, That's a tough question, since I've accumulated so many habits over the years aimed at helping me to be my best.
The one thing, though? I'd say I could not live without my daily pre-dawn trifecta of 16 ounces of warm water, 30 burpees, and a cold shower.
It hydrates me, gets my heart pumping, and delivers a jolt of dopamine to my brain that primes me to tackle my day head on. Try it, you'll get hooked! | | | They Said It | "It's not what you're capable of, it's what you're willing to do. I know plenty of people that are capable, I know fewer that are willing. Will is a powerful thing. Ask yourself, 'What are you willing to do?'" | – Mike Tomlin | | BEAT "SOCIAL JET LAG" | Lack of sleep is a national epidemic, and there are a ton of reasons why. Too much stress, caffeine, streaming, scrolling, and alcohol all contribute to lack of quality snooze time.
But new research focuses on another sleep threat – the "social jet lag" we suffer when we change our wake-up times.
Research shows that getting up an hour or more later on weekends makes us groggy, and even contributes to heart disease.
So set your wake-up time, and stay consistent even when you stay up later. If you're dragging, try a quick 20-minute power nap in the afternoon to feel refreshed. | | The Hard Way Podcast | | "For those people looking to improve their athletic performance, body composition, and health, the missing link most often is optimizing their metabolism." – Angelo Poli | | | | Was this email forwarded to you?
