| | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | 💥 Anti-Israel protesters clashed with police outside the debate. As Donald Trump and Kamala Harris debated in Philadelphia, pro-Palestine activists took to the streets just outside the venue, calling for an end to both Israel and America. Hundreds marched, carrying flags and signs in support of Palestine and calling for end to "genocide." As the tensions escalated, agitators clashed with police, leading to multiple arrests. | 🙅♂️ Republicans vow to block a Harris-led Iran deal. House Republicans are preparing to block any efforts by a potential Harris administration to negotiate a new Iran nuclear deal, accusing Biden and Harris of funneling "hundreds of billions of dollars" to Iran and supporting its terrorist proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah. Republicans argue that military deterrence, not negotiations, is the only way to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. | 🏨 An El Paso hotel was taken over by Tren de Aragua. A recent court filing revealed that one hotel in El Paso, Texas, has been overrun by the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, coming after reports that the gang had caused similar trouble in Colorado. In the past two years, there have been nearly 700 police calls, with video footage showing members partying and "drinking, smoking and dancing provocatively while children are present." | 🚀 The US is allowing Ukraine to strike more areas within Russia. The White House is planning to loosen restrictions to expand the area inside Russia where the Ukrainians can use US and British-donated weapons to defend against Russian missile strikes. Current talks between Washington and Kyiv signal a shift, indicating the Biden administration is permitting Ukraine to take more aggressive military actions in Russia. |

| | WHAT WE'RE HEARING | Donald Trump said Tuesday night's debate was his best one ever. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) condemned Laura Loomer for a racist tweet. CNN's Jake Tapper remarked that Trump is traveling with "bigots and liars" like the "depraved" Laura Loomer. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) said Kamala Harris is "an intelligent, capable person who has a point of view on issues."

| | IN THE LOOP | Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is punting on a government funding bill and the SAVE Act until next week. Massive wildfires have forced the evacuation of over 30,000 residents in Southern California, allegedly sparked by a man accused of arson. Voter trust in Donald Trump on the economy increased after the debate. A migrant released into the US through Biden-Harris's parole program is accused of murdering a 25-year-old woman in Tennessee. Four people were charged with defrauding the US Small Business Administration of over $178 million in pandemic relief loans. The most clicked link in our last newsletter was Trump saying he supports "modifying" the 25th Amendment.

| | MY THOUGHTS | The Americans Celebrating Oct. 7 | Good morning. Good morning. I recently wrote about anti-Israel groups planning rallies across the US this October, openly advertising these events as a celebration of Hamas' devastating Oct. 7 attacks against Jews last year. | Since Oct. 7, I've reported extensively on the anti-Israel movement and the far-left, anti-American sentiments driving it. I summarized how this movement ended up here in an article for the American Spectator. | This issue has become personal for me: I come from a family of American war veterans who risked their lives fighting communism and Islamic terrorism. Now, I see mobs on our soil praising both. I never thought I'd be in Washington, DC, photographing Hamas and Cuban flags flying near the US Capitol while watching our flag burn — but there I was. | If some Americans are brave enough to fight for that flag, the least I can do is tell the truth about those who want to destroy it and everything it stands for. | |

| | WASHINGTON | A Fleeting Moment of Unity Between Political Rivals | | The story | On the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump, and Senator JD Vance came together at Ground Zero in New York to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost in 2001. | Despite the political divisions of today's heated campaign season, there was a brief moment of civility as Harris and Trump shook hands before the ceremonies began, less than 24 hours after their contentious debate. This is a significant gesture given the current political climate, with the intensity and passions of the 2024 election looming large. | Also in attendance at the ceremony were New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, former NYC Mayors Bill de Blasio and Rudy Giuliani, and Donald Trump's sons, Eric and Don Jr. The political differences between many of these figures could not be more stark. But in this one instant, our political representatives demonstrated that the memory of 9/11 transcends partisan politics, even if only for a quick interlude. | After the event, Biden and Harris continued to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, participating in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Flight 93 Memorial. Biden made a brief gesture of bipartisan goodwill by donning a Trump hat at a local fire station. | September 11 is one of those days that looms so large in the American psyche that the whirlwind of national politics, even of a heated and tight presidential election, is second to the honor our leaders owe to the fallen. Though it's just one fleeting moment of unity between political enemies, it shows Americans that we have a higher identity than merely Democrat or Republican. | A note from us | This type of unity has been painfully absent in America in recent years. Since January 6, Democrats have often used the 9/11 anniversary to liken conservatives to the same threats America faced from abroad in the early 2000s. | Today, however, offers a refreshing glimpse of political normalcy — even as the Biden administration continues prosecuting its political opposition, and free speech remains shaky. | At Upward News, we never hesitate to hold our leaders accountable. We dive headfirst into the political fray, unafraid to challenge the powerful. But there are moments that rise above the noise. Some things are bigger than politics — some sacrifices too sacred to ignore. | On this day, we honor the nearly 3,000 souls lost on September 11, 2001. Their memory unites us, and their sacrifice demands our respect. We also salute the first responders and military heroes who have stood watch ever since, protecting the freedoms we hold dear. | God bless the fallen, and God bless the brave men and women who keep us safe. | |
