| | Good morning. The wolves of Wall Street aren't happy with President Donald Trump's back-and-forth on tariffs, but he's determined to pursue protectionism in order to bring back American industry. He's also pursuing something else: a primary challenger against libertarian Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), the only Republican to vote against the bill to fund the government. |

| | π WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | π° Chuck Schumer is voting for the shutdown bill. While Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had originally opposed voting for the government funding bill, he reversed course, attempting to argue that President Trump wanted a shutdown; enough Democrats are likely to join him to ensure passage. The bill will fund the government through September. Democrats had no good options here, as forcing a shutdown would have given the Trump administration large amounts of power to determine what stayed open. But voting to avoid a shutdown will incur the wrath of their party's base. | βοΈ A federal judge ruled that tens of thousands of fired employees must be re-hired. Last month, the Trump administration announced it was firing probationary β recently hired β workers. But a Clinton-appointed federal judge ruled that those firings were done incorrectly, arguing there are certain steps the administration has to take to fire individuals. The ruling will likely fuel talk on the right of reducing the power of federal district court judges to order nationwide injunctions, or even of simply ignoring their rulings entirely. | π€ Senate Republicans are skeptical of the House's plan to raise the debt ceiling. House Republicans want to raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion via reconciliation. But Senate Republicans are unconvinced; Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has already made clear that there may not be 50 votes, the minimum for reconciliation, to raise the debt ceiling by that much. With some Republicans unlikely to vote for raising it, Republicans will need Democratic support β an unlikely prospect. | π΅ House Democrats held their annual conference. At the retreat, held an hour outside DC, Democrats sought to find a way forward for their minority amidst appalling party ratings and an angry base. The governors of Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Michigan β all potential presidential candidates β also spoke. Democrats are completely locked out of power, which means they have few paths forward aside from obstructionism. But while obstruction can hurt the GOP, it likely will not increase support for Democrats. |
