Dear Chase,
Quick one today.
I've been watching a lot of newer copywriters in the trenches lately. I've recently taken on quite a few new students, and there's a clear differentiator between the ones that win and the ones that don't.
I have this one young kid who's definitely a talented copywriter, but for some reason, was struggling in the client acquisition stage.
By the grace of God, he was able to get a testimonial from Brad Lea.
He did a free project for him, Brad loved it, and he got a 20 second video testimonial out of it.
A lot of people will hate on free work.
Heck, *I* hate on free work. I always think you should get paid when you do something for someone.
Maybe this kid missed out on a grand or two, but that one video will end up making him WAY more money than Brad would've paid him.
It's already starting, too.
He's now able to send that testimonial to other guys in the space, lock in instant trust, and sign way bigger deals than he would have had to before.
A lot of times, the reason that freelancers have to lower their prices is because the trust factor isn't there.
It's not that your work isn't WORTH $4k+ a month. It could very well be.
But if you haven't made a name for yourself, someone might only be comfortable paying you $1500 a month.
Trust is money, Chase.
The point of today's email is this:
If you don't have any testimonials, and you're struggling getting clients, try and find somebody important that you can do stellar work for and get one.
If you really wow somebody with the quality of your work, you will get a good testimonial, and that testimonial will make you more money and bring you more clients than you can even imagine.
Go above and beyond for it.
Try to stand out.
Do not do what everyone else is doing.
One good co-sign can set you up to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
Go and seek it out.
Yours truly,
Alex.
