New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the U.S. and truly offers something for everyone. Situated on the East Coast, it's a diverse state with a number of urban areas, small towns, rural regions with beautiful forests and scenic trails, and of course, the world-famous beaches that are located along the Atlantic Ocean. There are plenty of historical sites throughout the state, including the secluded Batsto Village, where ironworks made household items and supplies for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. New Jersey is also home to more than 50 beautiful state parks, forests, and other protected areas, so hikers have their pick of outdoorsy destinations, from Palisades Interstate Park to Hacklebarney State Park. And, of course, you have your pick of great restaurants, wineries, and breweries. Visit the Garden State and you're sure to find your own favorite destination within this state.
Your Packing List
New Jersey offers perfectly pleasant weather in the fall, although there is usually a chance of an unexpected heatwave from late September through October. Be sure to pack layers, a light jacket, and perhaps a medium-weight sweater or two.
If you're planning to visit one of New Jersey's state parks, you'll want to pack a pair of supportive hiking boots. We recommend Keen's Voyageur Mid boots, which are extremely lightweight, flexible, and require very minimal breaking in, making them a great pick for day hikes (men's version available here).
The views over the Sete Cidades lake on Sao Miguel Island are some of the most famous in the Azores, and Vista do Rei (the King's View) viewpoint is the most popular place to do it. Sitting inside the crater of an extinct volcano, a bridge divides the lake into two sections. They each have distinct colors (especially when the sun is out) due to the different vegetation surrounding each part. Be sure to visit on a clear day if possible, as that's when you'll get those perfect postcard views.
